The first chapter of the Bedford Book of genres gave me a better definition of types of genres in writing. The chapter discussed how genre gives you many possibilities when writing, and I thought this was an interesting way to think about it. I’ve always thought of genres as distinct categories, such as different music genres, but in writing multiple genres can be used in a piece. The first chapter also discussed purpose, and how the way that you express your purpose in your writing can affect the genre. You also want to use your purpose to appeal to a specific audience. Some writers choose a very specific audience, while other writers want to capture a more broad audience. I also really enjoyed the section of this chapter that discussed aesthetics and design. I believe that with social media growing so much, design is more important in writing than it has ever been before. People are always going to be drawn to aesthetic pieces of writing, and they will be more willing to read the piece if it has a nice and consistent design. I am excited to use these concepts in my own writing as we start working on bigger projects and assignments.
