I think all of us can relate to a time where we went to write a paper and just felt as if we couldn’t get the right words out to express ourselves. Anne Lamott’s Shitty First Drafts says “Very few writers really know what they are doing until they’ve done it.” I never thought about it this way before, but this statement is very true. It’s hard to organize and perfect our thoughts until we first write them down on paper. This is why it’s important to write a first draft and write revisions from there. You can’t expect to write a perfect paper your first time around, and this applies to everything in life. It is beneficial to listen to constructive criticism and really evaluate your writing to make it the best that it can be. We are able to revise our papers as many times as we want in this class because Mat wants to give us the opportunity to present our best work and keep improving throughout the semester. On my first “shitty draft” I am going to focus on getting as many thoughts on paper as I can, and then I can go back and better organize my thoughts and ideas.
